31.1 14.01 Solid Fuel Heating Devices (Fireplaces, Woodstove)

31.1.2 Axium SOP Differences

Axium Requires: Inspector should turn the gas fireplace on/off if the pilot light is on and also check for any gas leaks with gas detector. This is for section 14.02 (Gas Fireplaces).

31.1.3 Tools Needed

The inspector will require a flashlight when inspecting a solid fuel fireplace.

31.1.4 Procedure

  • Inspector should take flashlight and inspect all accessible parts of the fireplace for any defects.
  • Check the damper door by opening and closing, if it is accessible.

31.1.5 Common Defects

  • Damper door being stuck and not being able to open or close.
  • Damage or cracks to the firebricks.
  • Missing smoke detector or carbon-monoxide detector in same room as fireplace.
  • Fireplace being very dirty and requiring cleaning.
  • Not having proper clearance from combustibles.
  • Improper material in the fireplace or around it that could be dangerous.

31.1.6 Common Mistakes

  • Not checking the damper door or thoroughly inspecting the fireplace.

31.2 14.02 Gas/LP Fire logs and Fireplaces

31.2.2 Axium SOP Differences

Axium Requires: Inspector should turn the gas fireplace on/off if the pilot light is on and also check for any gas leaks with gas detector. This is for section 14.02 (Gas Fireplaces).

31.2.3 Tools Needed

The inspector will require a flashlight and gas detector when inspecting a gas fireplace.

31.2.4 Procedure

  • Inspector should turn fireplace on with switch if the pilot light is on. Make sure to take picture of flames when fireplace is on and make sure to turn off.
  • Check for possible gas leaks with gas detector and take a picture showing this with the shut off valve in the picture. You must have the gas detector in the picture or else it’s your word against the client. Use your nose and if you smell anything, start looking. Make sure gas detector doesn’t come into contact with dust or it could set it off. If there is a gas leak detected, make sure to check it three times with gas meter. (Check procedure under the Exterior: Gas Meter section).

31.2.5 Common Defects

  • Having a gas leak.
  • Missing a gas shut off valve.

31.2. Common Mistakes

  • Not turning the fireplace off after the inspector has turned it on.
